Craig Robinson: ‘Office’ worker leaps to bigscreen roles

Comedy Impact Report 2010: Bigscreen Bigshots

Craig Robinson is just trying to keep his job. In 2010, that job included film roles alongside John Cusack and Eddie Murphy (an idol of his), while his character Darryl on “The Office” got promoted from the warehouse to the sales floor. But Robinson isn’t getting ahead of himself: “I want movies, TV — but I don’t think about it. I just work,” he says.

And Robinson won’t let Darryl get too big for his Dunder Mifflin britches either: As for Internet rumors that the piano-playing paper pusher will replace boss Michael Scott when Steve Carell leaves the show? “Those people should not gamble,” he says.

So Robinson keeps right on working in projects as varied as “Hot Tub Time Machine,” which bested expectations with its $50 million haul, and the blockbuster toon “Shrek Forever After,” in which Robinson joined Jon Hamm and Jane Lynch as the voices of new ogres. Robinson drew from his standup background this summer as host of NBC’s revamped “Last Comic Standing” and is now shooting Tyler Perry’s “We the Peeples.”

“I’m enjoying the ride,” Robinson insists. “That’s all I can do. For the next five weeks, (co-star) Kerry Washington is my girlfriend. Life is good.”
