Helmer Smith, thesps Willis and Morgan celebrate WB pic
A lthough Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan play a pair of cops in Warner Bros. comedy “Cop Out,”director Kevin Smith wasn’t about to put up a fight for pic’s original title, “A Couple of Dicks.”Helmer, who was in Gotham Monday for film’s AMC Lincoln Square Theater preem, followed by an after-party at Landmarc, said he would have been more disappointed about the name change if he hadn’t made “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.” “Seeing the effect that title had on the movie, I was like Chief Brody in ‘Jaws II’ when (Warner Bros.) told me they wanted to make the switch,”Smith said. “I was like I’ve seen a shark up close, and I don’t want to go through that hell again. I said, ‘Go ahead call it something else. Anything that gets people in seats.'” Helmer said the name change came in response to word from the major networks that they couldn’t run ads with the original title prior to 9 p.m. “The studio was about to lock on this really bad title, ‘A Couple of Cops,’ which is so lame, and I said to (pic’s producer) Adam Siegel that that title is such a cop-out, and he goes, ‘That should be the title.’ And that was that.”
