New distributor sets documentary on cult film
Newly minted distributor Area23a has announced it will release the documentary “Best Worst Movie,” which world preemed at South by Southwest.
Area23A, formed in January by Richard Abramowitz and Kirt Eftekhar, will open the film in Austin, Texas; Los Angeles; New York; and other markets in the spring.
The documentary is directed by Michael Paul Stephenson in his helming debut and focuses on 1989’s “Troll 2,” in which he starred as a child.
“Best Worst Movie” centers on the story of an Alabama dentist-turned-cult-movie icon and an Italian filmmaker as they come to terms with their internationally revered cinematic failure.
Stephenson and his wife, Lindsay Stephenson, produced “Best Worst Movie” under their production company, Magic Stone Prods. Brad Klopman also serves as a producer.
Area23a is currently distributing “Soundtrack for a Revolution,” “The Mighty Uke,” “American Harmony” and “They Came to Play.” It will release Sandy Cioffi’s “Sweet Crude” later this year.
