Busan Intl. Film Commission and Industry Showcase (Bifcom) celebrates its 10th anniversary with “All That 3D,” a gathering of international 3D experts slated to discuss technologies and trends in a region that’s wholeheartedly embraced the format. Reps from 15 countries will attend Bifcom on Oct 9-11.

Companies expected to present demonstrations of research and 3D technology include Technicolor Asia-Pacific, Sony, Korea’s AZ Works and 4K, and New Zealand’s Weta Workshop. Busan-based postproduction company AZ Works presents a 3D production process used on short film “Alpha Centauri,” helmed by Jung Yoon-chul (“Marathon”), using 3Ality’s 3D rig.

On Oct. 9, panelists, including 3Ality CEO Steve Schklair, helmer Jung Yoon-chul and Kim Sang-il, head of visual production team at Korea’s major broadcasting company SBS, will discuss issues in 3D production and the role of 3D images in TV broadcasting.

“We hope to set a place for Korean filmmakers to share and learn the methods of 3D production,” says Oh Seok-geun, the new director of Busan Film Commission, who took over in early September, “(and) at the same time present streamlined information on 3D from around the world. Ultimately, we try to match capital and money favorable for 3D with (the) film industry in Busan, based on the various types of 3D operations.

“In the past decade, the Busan Film Commission has fostered industry infrastructure. Now it’s time to get our breath to take a new leap forward. We will find out new ways to push Busan’s film industry forward. For this, I think the commission should put more efforts toward strengthening location services,” adds Oh.

The Busan Film Commission will also host the third edition of Film Policy Plus: Asian Film Policy Forum (FPP). Officials from Asian countries in charge of cultural policies will give keynote speeches on the fast-growing Asian biz and what to look forward to in the future.

FPP provides presentations and forums highlighting support programs of Asian countries for international co-productions. The government policies of China and Australia will be introduced as model of case studies, while Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture and New Zealand’s Film Auckland present their new location incentives.
