Rotterdam unleashes Tiger titles

Competition lineup includes five world premieres

Fifteen first and second features will compete for the VPRO Tiger Awards at the Rotterdam Film Festival, which unspools from Jan. 27 to Feb. 7.

Lineup has five world preems, including Paz Fabrega’s “Cold Water of the Sea” and Levan Koguashvili’s “Street Days,” the fest’s first competitors from Costa Rica and Georgia, respectively.

The other world debuts are Yelena Renard and Nikolay Renard’s “Mama” from Russia, Michael Noer and Tobias Lindholm’s “R” from Denmark and “C’est deja l’ete,” shot by Dutch director Martijn Smits in French-speaking Belgium.

The U.S. is represented by Chicago-based filmmaker Ben Russell’s feature debut, “Let Each One Go Where He May.”

Winners of the three Tiger Awards, each worth 15,000 ($21,600), will be announced Feb. 5. In related news, the 2010 IFP/Rotterdam Lab Fellowship recipients are Jason Orans (“Night Catches Us”) and Thomas Woodrow (“Bass Ackwards”).
