Multi-hyphenate to produce through his 34th Street Films
Perry’s producing through his 34th Street Films with Lionsgate, which has distributed all nine of Perry’s pics. “We The Peeples” is set to start shooting in September with 34th Street’s Matt Moore and Tyler Perry Studios president Ozzie Areu producing along with Paul Hall and Stephanie Allain.
Michael Paseornek, Lionsgate president of motion picture development and production, is overseeing development and production for the minimajor.
Project’s written by Tina Gordon Chism with a young man enduring the weekend from hell when he surprises his girlfriend by showing up to meet her parents during the family’s annual end of summer celebration. Gordon Chism, whose scripting credits include “Drumline” and “ATL,” is nearing a finalized deal to direct.
“We The Peeples” is packaged by WME, with cast to be announced shortly
Lionsgate has already lined up release dates for the next two Perry pics — a feature adaptation of “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf” on Jan. 14, Perry’s first film to be based on non-original source material; and “Madea’s Big Happy Family” on April 22. Perry will again play Madea, as well as write, helm and produce.
Perry’s pics have been consistent performers, starting with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” which grossed $50 million in 2005. His top performer was last year’s “Madea Goes to Jail” with $90 million and his “Why Did I Get Married Too” topped $60 million this spring.
He was also a co-presenter and exec producer on “Precious,” which grossed $47 million.
34th Street and Chism Gordon are repped by WME.
