Vachek gets a retrospective while Law and Herz are feted

Russian helmer, actor and producer Nikita Mikhalkov is this year’s recipient of the Karlovy Vary festival’s Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema.

His latest fiilm, “Burnt by the Sun 2: Exodus,” will screen at Karlovy Vary.

Thesp Jude Law will also be feted with the Festival President’s Award. The “Sherlock Holmes” star was recently nominated for a Tony for “Hamlet.”

Fest will also screen a complete retrospective of the work of director and thinker Karel Vachek.

Vachek’s critical, nonconformist character was immediately evident in his first film, “Moravian Hellas,” shot in 1963 as his graduation work at Prague’s FAMU film academy.

A 35-minute documentary about ethnic dancing, it was not a great hit with Czechoslovak audiences.

His next film, “Elective Affinities” in 1968 was a full-length documentary that featured interviews with key players in the Prague Spring democracy movement.

The film won the grand prize at Karlovy Vary in 1969.

Vachek will hold a masterclass at Karlovy Vary where he and producer Radim Prochazka will discuss the director’s just-finished documentary “Obscurantist and His Lineage.”
