Godard classic to be featured at COLCOA

'Pierrot le Fou' to premier at L.A.'s festival of French films

A restored version Jean-Luc Godard’s 1965 classic “Pierrot le Fou” will have its international premiere at L.A.’s 14th annual City of Lights, City of Angels festival of French films, running April 19-25 at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex. The film’s femme star, Anna Karina, will make a rare public appearance at the event, scheduled for April 23.

Serge Toubiana, head of the Paris-based Cinémathèque Française, will participate in a panel discussion, including Karina, following the screening, presented in association with StudioCanal and Cinémathèque Française.

In related news, as part of the fest’s Happy Hour Talks, writer-director Claude Miller will be the subject of its “Focus on a Filmmaker” panel April 22, moderated by Steven Gaydos, Variety executive editor, features. The focus will include the West Coast premiere of “I’m Glad That My Mother is Alive.” Miller co-wrote and directed “A Secret,” which bowed at COL•COA in 2008 prior to its theatrical release in the U.S.

Other panels will include French filmmakers talking about American cinema, scheduled for April 20, and an April 21 discussion on foreign film distribution issues presented with the support of Unifrance and moderated by John Kochman, exec director, Unifrance USA. Participants have yet to be announced.

There will also be a special homage to the late Eric Rohmer, with a screening of his “Pauline at the Beach.” The tribute is being co-presented by MGM with support from the Los Angeles Film & TV Office of the French Embassy and Cultures France.

COL•COA will reveal its entire program March 24.
