Warner’s box office tops $1 billion

Studio is third this year to pass benchmark

On the heels of its top B.O. perf for “Inception,” Warner Bros. has announced that it has surpassed the $1 billion benchmark at the domestic B.O. According to the studio, it’s the first to have topped that mark for 10 consecutive years.

Warner is the third studio, after Paramount and 20th Century Fox, to reach the milestone in 2010.

So far this year, 3D pic “Clash of the Titans” reps Warner’s highest-grossing title with $160.6 million domestically, followed by “Inception,” which posted a $143.7 million cume with Sunday’s estimates.

Other top 2010 titles for Warner include laffer ensemble “Valentine’s Day” ($110.5 million), “Sex and the City 2” ($95 million) and “The Book of Eli” ($94.8 million).

Warner also touts carry-over titles from 2009, such as “Sherlock Holmes,” which grossed $106.9 million since Jan. 1 and “The Blind Side,” totaling $59.4 million, as contributing to this year’s performance. “Sherlock Homes” has reached a total $209 million in the U.S.; “The Blind Side,” $256 million.

Last year, the studio reached the same benchmark a week earlier, during the July 17-19 weekend.
