3D pics 'Avatar,' 'Shrek,' 'Alice' lead the charge
Russia has broken through the billion-dollar box office barrier for the first time.
In the past 12 months, the country’s gross totaled $1,009,812,624, according to figures collated by weekly trade magazine Russian Film Business Today.
The landmark was reached thanks chiefly to the massive returns for three 3D Hollywood blockbusters, reported Alexander Semenov, founder and publisher of the magazine — considered Russia’s most authoritative source for industry figures. “Avatar” grossed $116 million, “Shrek Forever After” took $51 million and “Alice in Wonderland” nabbed $42 million.
The country’s box office year, which runs through the end of October, was boosted by premium rates for 3D tickets and came on the back of more than 158 million admissions for the 332 films released during the year.
