‘Alice’ grosses over $30 million Friday

Tim Burton's 3D remake on track for big opening

Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” is more than liking her reflection in the looking glass.

Tim Burton’s 3D tentpole is likely to gross north of $30 million on Friday, which puts it on track to score one of the biggest openings of all time for the January-March stretch, as well as the biggest debut of 2010.

Best opening day for January-March is Warner Bros.’ “300,” which grossed $28.1 million on its first Friday (3/9/2007). Pic posted an opening weekend gross of $70.9 million, the top bow ever for a March release.

Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” grossed $26.6 million on its first Friday (2/25/04), and $83.8 million for the weekend. That makes “Passion” the record-holder for top January-March bow.

All-audience pics like “Alice,” toplining Johnny Depp, often see a bump from Friday to Saturday because of younger demos.
