Taking on a Marvel superhero can be daunting. Trying to please the fanboy community that pores over each frame of a film looking for flaws can be equally intimidating.
Visual effects supervisor Ben Snow, a self-professed fanboy, called upon his fellow geeks at Industrial Light & Magic to weigh in on and contribute to the design of Iron Man’s all-important suit.
“It’s good to be informed (about the Marvel universe),” explains Australian native Snow, who is based at ILM’s San Franciso campus where he oversaw the film’s animated effects. “It’s a fanboy’s dream to be working on this film. But as a fanboy, you are your own worst critic.”
L.A.-based visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs, who oversaw the film’s overall effects, says the biggest challenge was creating “a very big show but still with a comicbook sensibility.”
