Retro sequence sings in ‘Princess’

Song delivers sophisticated entertainment

Hard-working, pragmatic, yet enough of a dreamer to follow her ambitions, Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose) buys an old, broken-down warehouse on the New Orleans waterfront in order to turn it into a restaurant. In a show-stopping number, “Almost There,” Tiana describes her vision to her mother (vocally limned by Oprah Winfrey) about how she’s going to realize her dream. The animation matches Rose’s inspired and inspiring singing as Tiana is transported into her fantasy world: All flat, streamline moderne style, gorgeous colors and 1920s jazz imagery that delivers a highly sophisticated revelry rarely seen in films aimed at kids. Or adults.
