Company nabs North American rights to 'Beautiful Thing'

Palisades Tartan has picked up North American rights to “The First Beautiful Thing” (La Prima Cosa Bella), Italy’s official 2010 Oscar entry in the foreign-language film race.

Written and directed by Paolo Virzi, comedic drama stars Valerio Mastandrea and Micaela Ramazzotti. Critical and B.O. hit in Italy nabbed David di Donatello awards for screenplay, actor and actress.

Palisades will release the film next year in North America.

“We’re thrilled to share in Italy’s excitement for ‘The First Beautiful Thing’ and look forward to bringing it to American audiences nationwide. Paolo crafted a sexy, fun and emotionally moving film, and Micaela and Valerio are international discoveries,” Palisades prexy-CEO Soumya Sriraman said.

Film follows a strong, optimistic woman raising two children against all odds. No matter the circumstances, she teaches her family to remain open and loving to life.

“First Beautiful Thing” was produced by Fabrizio Donvito, Bernadetto Habib and Marco Cohen.

Deal for U.S. rights was negotiated by Paola Corvina and Jef Nuyts of Italy’s IntraMovies on behalf of the filmmakers.Palisades Tartan distributes both in the U.S. and U.K. Past U.S. releases include Park Chan-wook’s “Oldboy,” Michael Winterbottom’s “9 Songs” and Carlos Reygadas’ “Silent Light.”
