‘Network’ scores with San Fran critics

Firth, Williams take best actor, actress

“The Social Network” picked up yet more awards-season steam as the San Francisco Film Critics’ Circle announced its annual kudos.

The founding-of-Facebook drama took honors for best picture, with Aaron Sorkin nabbing the prize for adapted screenplay. “Network” helmer David Fincher shared the director prize with Darren Aronofsky for “Black Swan,” which also took the cinematography nod for d.p. Matthew Libatique.

Michelle Williams drew the actress kudo for her half of a disintegrating marriage in “Blue Valentine.” The role of stammering King George VI in “The King’s Speech” won Colin Firth his second actor nod in a row from the San Francisco critics, after last year’s laurels for “A Single Man.” “Speech” also earned David Seidler the nod for original screenplay.

Support thesp plaudits went to Jacki Weaver for “Animal Kingdom” and John Hawkes for “Winter’s Bone.”

Following national trends, the animated feature prize went to “Toy Story 3.” Bong Joon-ho’s “Mother” drew the nod for foreign-language feature. Documentary kudos went to Amir Bar-Lev’s “The Tillman Story.”Presented to a local innovator, the Marlon Riggs Award was bestowed this year on veteran teacher, exhibitor and repertory programmer Elliot Lavine. It was noted that over the last two decades, “His revivals of rare archival studio, independent, and exploitation titles” have particularly “played a major role in the renewed popularity of film noir and pre-Production Code features.”
