Mo'Nique hasn't been unique in kudo circles
Mo’Nique has dominated supporting actress awards talk since last winter for her turn in “Precious.” The film earned a special jury award for acting in its debut at Sundance last year, kicking off a streak of kudos wins for the actress-talkshow host-comedian that includes most major critics’ groups, the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards.
Few competitors emerged until “Up in the Air” vaulted co-stars Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick into the race — often against each other. Only Kendrick has eked out wins, from the National Board of Review and critics in Austin and Toronto.
Penelope Cruz won this category last year, which could bolster a track record that includes Globe and SAG noms for her role in “Nine.” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s nom for “Crazy Heart” was the category’s surprise, as it’s the only honor she’s received so far for the part.
Notable contenders for the nom also included Julianne Moore, who earned Globes and Critics Choice bids for “A Single Man,” Diane Kruger for “Inglourious Basterds” and Samantha Morton for “The Messenger.”
