Cabler overcomes obstacles for bash
Having a poolside party on a rainy night is enough of a challenge, add in a fire marshal who insists on keeping the numbers down, the longest line of guests wanting to attend, Martin Scorsese (who is a magnet for attracting movie stars to his side) coming by immediately after the show and somehow HBO pulled off what was arguably the most fun after-party on Globes night.
The big deal for the HBO execs was Scorsese’s attendance. Programming prexy Michael Lombardo said the film director “is discovering TV and thankfully he’s discovering it at HBO.”
Entertainment prexy Sue Naegle said the cabler would love to work more with Scorsese and “if he wants to do ‘King of Comedy’ meets a Mormon version of ‘Raging Bull’ it’s OK with me.”
As for himself, Scorsese said the big win for “Avatar” made him think seriously about 3D and all the “new toys and new technology” that historically haven’t played much of a role in his films.
“My whole thing has been ‘a close-up of a face, the camera moves in,’ ” he said. “Imagine that in 3D. It’ll be great!”
