‘Cell 211’ takes 16 Goya noms

Monzon thriller leads Spain's Oscar equivalent

MADRID Vindicating tipsters, Daniel Monzon’s “Cell 211” dominated nominations for the 2010 Spanish Academy Goya Awards for film, scoring in 16 categories including picture, director, adapted screenplay and actor (Luis Tosar). A fall sleeper, the prison thriller has grossed E9.5 million ($13.5 million) at the Spanish box office.

211″ will duke it out for picture with this year’s other most-nommed movies: Alejandro Amenabar’s “Agora,” which competes in 13 categories, Fernando Trueba’s “The Dancer and the Thief” (Spain’s foreign-language film Oscar hopeful) and Juan Jose Campanella’s “The Secret in Their Eyes,” with nine noms apiece.

Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken Embraces,” which has made the last-five cut for a foreign-language film Golden Globe, scored just five noms, including screenplay and actress (Penelope Cruz).

Cruz will face off with “Agora” star Rachel Weisz for actress.

Announced Saturday by Spanish Academy prexy Alex de la Iglesia, the Goya Awards have been moved back from late January to Feb. 14 to maximize their box office bump.
