Vodacom unveils mobile VOD service

South African package to offer slew of Hollywood series

Following on the heels of pay TV provider MultiChoice, which launched South Africa’s first streaming mobile TV service Aug. 1, Vodacom is unveiling its own mobile service this month.

TV:On Demand will offer the country’s first mobile video-on-demand package, focussing mainly on TV series drawn from the library of the U.K.’s OnDemand Group, which inked a deal with Vodacom to provide content.

The offering will include “The Sopranos,” “Sex and the City” and “Entourage.”

Customers will have to pay more for VOD. MultiChoice’s DStv Mobile offers its streaming service for 59 rand ($8) a month, or $2.50 a week. TV:On Demand is priced at $10 a month or $2.70 a week. Both the Vodacom and MultiChoice services will use Vodacom’s 3G network.
