‘Terminator’ has digital, physical mix

“There’s a lot of volleying back and forth between physical effects and digital effects,” says Charles Gibson, and that should be a theme in his bake-off presentation. “This is a war-action movie with science-fiction elements in it. The science-fiction elements are largely digital, and a lot of the war heat action was provided by Mike Meinardus, the special effects coordinator.”

“From the beginning the director was keen on having that energy and heat on set. It’s initially a little more work for the digital elements to mesh with all that but you get this great realism.”

For “the cherry on the sundae” there’s a digital Arnold Schwarzenegger, appearing as he did in the 1983 franchise starter. “So much of what Arnold did was a performance,” says Gibson. “We were constantly grappling with performance and likeness issues all the way through. It’s very much an artistic process.”
