MultiChoice jumps into the stream

It's first in South Africa to enter mobile market

Pay TV provider MultiChoice will unveil a streaming mobile TV service on Aug. 1, making it the first South African provider to enter the mobile market.

DStv Mobile will offer 11 channels and VOD for 59 rand ($8) a month.

The subscription package will include two SuperSport channels, CNN Intl., E! Entertainment, music video web Channel O, and entertainment nets.

The service will be available over 3G networks to subscribers of the Vodacom phone network.

DStv Mobile execs said they were offering a streaming service because they had not been granted a mobile broadcasting license by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa.

Competitors Super 5 Media have also applied for a license with the regulatory body.

Terrestrial web e.tv was the first and only South African broadcaster to be granted a mobile broadcasting license, but is yet to launch its service.
