Early berth for f/x kudos

Visual Effects Society to hold kudofest on Jan. 28

The Visual Effects Society will hold its 2011 kudofest on Friday, Jan. 28 at the Century Plaza Hotel. By bumping up the awards by four weeks, the winners are better positioned to influence Oscar voting, which will be just under way in late January.

Org has also added three animation categories for this cycle: animated short, animated commercial and animated character in a vidgame. With the additions, VES has eight animation categories among its total of 25.

Unlike AMPAS, the VES lets its members around the world view presentations and vote online, and permits “befores-and-afters” in the presentations. As a result its choices often differ from the Acad’s — though last year “Avatar” took home gold from both orgs.
