Disney retools animation slate

3D 'Beauty' reboot, 'Newt' yanked from schedule

Disney has taken an eraser to its already crowded toon slate, removing the 3D reboot of “Beauty and the Beast” from its 2011 launch pad and Disney/Pixar toon “Newt” from the 2012 sked.

Neither toon had been given a specific release date.

Meanwhile, the Mouse House’s 3D sequel to “Monsters, Inc.” was moved up two weeks to bow on Nov. 2, 2012, following its predecessor’s release date 11 years to the day.

According to Disney, the studio still plans to release a 3D version of “Beauty and the Beast” but was hesitant to oversaturate the market as a DVD reissue of the 1991 pic is slated to hit shelves later this year. Disney originally skedded the reboot to roll this year to help boost homevid sales but pushed back the release to July 1 to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the pic’s release.”At some point, I believe we will have a 3D release of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ but you have to look for the appropriate time and place,” said Disney distrib topper Chuck Viane. “Right now, that marketplace is crowded.”

As for “Newt,” Disney axed the romantic comedy from sound designer Gary Rydstrom, allocating resources to other titles. “Who knows if and when we get the right pieces together,” Viane said.

Disney’s Rapunzel retelling “Tangled” will launch on Nov. 24, while its 2011 toon slate includes Pixar’s “Cars 2” on June 24, followed closely by “Winnie the Pooh” on July 15.

Disney/Pixar toon “Toy Story 3” is the summer’s top earner to date, with a boffo $391.6 million domestically and worldwide totals reaching $844 million.

Along with the studio’s revised toon sked, Disney also announced it will screen sneaks of live-action horse racing drama “Secretariat,” toplining Diane Lane, on Oct. 2 — a week before its Stateside launch — while high school-themed comedy “Prom” will unspool April 29.
