AOL, which is investing more in original online content in order to attract more marketing dollars from advertisers, has tapped David Eun as its top content chief.
He starts reporting to AOL chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong when he begins the job in March.
Eun replaces Bill Wilson, who has served as president of AOL Media for the past nine years, and is ankling as AOL is moving from licensing content to becoming more of a producer of original fare internally.
Based in New York, Eun will serve as president of AOL Media and Studios, and be responsible for the company’s more than 80 news and entertainment sites, its New York and Los Angeles studios, its Seed.com publishing platform, as well as the newly acquired StudioNow video platform.
Eun most recently was VP of strategic partnerships at Google, where he managed global content partnerships with Google and YouTube.
Eun said, “AOL has a unique opportunity to bring together its core strengths in the key areas of content and journalism, distribution, and advertising to engage its users, partners and advertisers in a way very few companies can.”
Until 2006, Eun helped oversee AOL as VP, operations for the media and communications for Time Warner, overseeing the development of new digital distribution and content businesses for AOL, Time Warner Cable and the Time, Inc. divisions.
“David brings an impressive breadth of media experience to AOL at an exciting juncture for the company as we focus on scaling our content platforms, production and partnerships to offer quality, original content that will engage consumers and bring them back to our properties time and again,” Armstrong said.
Announcement comes as AOL reported a small but notable fourth-quarter profit this week of $1.4 million after losing $1.96 billion in the same period a year ago. It reported nearly $810 million in revenue during its first earnings report as an independent company since its December spinoff from Time Warner Inc.
