Director to use format for 'Invention of Hugo Cabret'

Martin Scorsese is the latest director to take the plunge into 3D.

Following on the heels of the success of such 3D pics as “Alice in Wonderland” and “Avatar,” the “Departed” helmer has opted to employ the technology for his next project, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.”

Sony, which is distributing the GK Films production, has dated the film for Dec. 9, 2011. Though “Hugo Cabret” currently holds the date to itself, the end of 2011 is shaping up to be a busy frame for 3D fare. There are eight films dated between Nov. 4, 2011, and the end of that year; seven are being made in 3D, including the third “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and the first installment in a planned “Tintin” trilogy.

Based on Brian Selznick’s bestselling children’s book, “Hugo Cabret” is set in 1930s Paris and centers on a 12-year-old orphan who must solve the mystery of a broken robot.

Project, which will begin lensing in London in June, marks Scorsese’s first foray into kidlit as well as his debut 3D film.

John Logan adapted the screenplay.
