Oscar winner eyes 3D toon

Campanella to direct Argentinean project

Argentine helmer-scribe Juan Jose Campanella, who won the foreign-language Oscar for his romantic thriller “El secreto de sus ojos” (The Secret in Their Eyes), will helm Argentina’s first 3D toon.

Tentatively titled “Foosball” after the popular table game, the $9.4 million Spanish-language pic had been previously announced (Variety.com, Nov. 27).

The 3D element has been added to cash in on the craze.

Campanella co-wrote the toon’s original screenplay with Eduardo Sacheri, author of the book on which “Secret” is based, along with Gaston Gorali and Axel Kuschevatzky.

Two years in development, “Foosball” will start production shortly. Campanella expects it will take another two years to complete the co-production with Plural-Jempsa, the Argentinian arm of Spanish conglom Plural.

Animation will be split between Spain and Argentina.

Campanella has been flooded with offers since his win in March, Argentina’s second foreign Oscar success since 1985 when “The Official Story” snagged the prize.

He’s still weighing his options and hopes to combine any new project with work on “Foosball.”

Sony Pictures Classics is releasing “Secret” Stateside on April 16.
