France Televisions picks up animated skeins

Network picks up 'Charlot,' 3D 'Christmas'

French pubcaster France Televisions has bought three 3D animated series, “Charlot,” “Peter Pan” and “Loopdidoo’s Zany Christmas,” which will screen in 3D on the pubaster’s web platform.

France Televisions will create an event by launching the two-part 3D toon “Loopdidoo’s Zany Christmas” on Ludo Web TV on Christmas day, while the CGI version of the show will air on the TV channel France 3.

Children will be able to get their 3D glasses in a magazine that will hit stands weeks before.

“We’re testing stereo 3D programs on our web platform to see how it works,” said Julien Borde, head of France Televisions’ youth programming. “Now that S3D is the new standard for animated-movies and vidgames, we figure kids will also want to watch their series in stereo 3D.”

Based on Alexis Nesme’s comicbook “Grabouillon,” “Loopdidoo” is a preschool toon co-produced by Gaul’s Blue Spirit Animation and France 3.

“Charlot” (104 six-minute episodes) and “Peter Pan” (26 half hours) are set up at Paris-based Method Animation, which also produces “The Little Prince,” a 3D toon series adapted from Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s classic, that’s been pre-bought by France Televisions.

“Charlot,” based on Charlie Chaplin’s short films, is co-produced by France’s mini-major MK2, which has theatrical, TV and DVD rights to Chaplin’s film library, and India’s leading animation studio, DQ Entertainment.

“Peter Pan,” an $11.02 million animated series adapted from J.M. Barrie’s novel, is co-produced with DQ Entertainment. The 3D element represents 15% of the series budget. But Method Animation founder Aton Soumache says producing in 3D is a prerequisite to insure the value and longevity of programs on catalogs.

On a more traditional note, France Televisions has pre-bought “Les Grandes grandes vacances” (The Big, Big Holidays) from toon producer Les Armateurs (“Triplets of Belleville,” “The Secret of Kells”).

The 1939-set toon skein (10 half-hours) turns on two siblings living at their grandparents’ home in Normandy during WWII. The script is based on real-life stories from people who were youngsters during the war.
