Comcast adds movie titles to menu

Company expands offerings by 9,000 titles

Comcast is upping the ante on its on demand broadband service, adding some 9,000 movie titles to its menu.

Comcast announced the expansion a few hours before chairman and CEO is to address Hollywood movers and shakers at the Cable Show confab in downtown Los Angeles.

Comcast said the vast expansion of movie titles on its on-demand service Fancast Xfinity TV service, which makes an array of TV shows and movies available for viewing online to Comcast cable subscribers, was made possible by a new content storage system that allows for the delivery of a much greater volume of programming. The movie push will roll out in gradually this year in key Comcast markets starting with Phildelphia and Washington, D.C.

“It’s the biggest thing we’ve ever done in on demand,” said Derek Harrar, Comcast’s senior veep and g.m. of video entertainment services.

The new titles bring to 11,000 the number of pics that Comcast has available on-demand. Comcast also has a service that offers more than 5,000 titles for download to rent or own.

New pics coming to Comcast include “New Moon,” “Precious,” “Crazy Heart,” “The Blind Side” and “Nine,” as well as vintage fare such as the “Godfather” series.
