3D for the home coming

Studios plan slew of DVD releases

Get ready for 3D movies for the home.

Sony says it will release a 3D Blu-ray version of “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs this summer, with more to follow. The Mouse House, meanwhile, promised a 3D disc of “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” during the fourth quarter.

Sony is timing the 3D disc debut of “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” to the rollout of its 3D compatible Bravia TV sets. The 2D version of the movie debuted on disc on Tuesday.

The release of the 3D “A Christmas Carol,” directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey, will launch a new line of Disney Digital 3D movies for the home.

The studio has also created a “3D Showcase Disc” for early adopters who buy 3D TVs before it arrives. The disc contains Walt Disney’s 1953 animated short “Working for Peanuts,” promotional trailers for 3D-enabled Blu-ray releases of “Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Toy Story 3,” plus original content.
