The crowd here has certainly been a receptive audience for Stewart and Colbert, but the best reaction has been for the music.
The sanity-fear interplay, featuring the former Cat Stevens singing “Peace Train” against Ozzy Osborne singing “Crazy Train,” capped by the O’Jays doing “peace Train.” The duo of Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy was one of the most stirring moment.
Then there was the Stewart-Colbert “I Love America” — the most direct barb at “take my country back” Tea Party patriotism.
The crowd sang along — as much as it could.
“I am sorry you had to hear me sing, Stewart said afterward. “I promise never to do it again. It worked in rehearsal.”
