Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally — to be staged on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday — is starting to take on LeBron-level hype. As Politico has reported, there’s already some uneasiness among Beck’s ostensible allies that he’s merely doing it to promote himself (or buying gold) or to create some lasting movement.
The promotional video put out for the event is so over-the-top that you wonder if it really is a parody. “Every great achievement in human history has started with one person. One crazy idea,” it says. Particularly irksome to civil rights leaders are comparisons to Martin Luther King, who gave his “I Have a Dream Speech” 47 years ago on Saturday. King was practically the embodiment of social justice, a term that Beck has repeatedly attacked throughout the year as a kind of insurgent force infiltrating American religion.
