Joel Surnow’s miniseries “The Kennedys” hadn’t even been cast before it stirred controversy, as historians blasted one version of the script as a conservative’s exploitive take on the clan.
But History (aka The History Channel) is going ahead with the project. As Variety’s Mike Schneider reports, Greg Kinnear will star as JFK and Katie Holmes as Jacqueline. Barry Pepper will play Bobby and Tom Wilkinson will play Joe Sr.
The channel also complains that the pre-publicity on their porject was unfair, because the historians, as well as Kennedy speechwriter Ted Sorenson, had not seen a final draft as it was still in development. The campaign against the project has been led by Robert Greenwald of Brave New Films, a liberal advocacy organization, which launched a site, StopKennedySmears.org.
History says that its resident historians will vet the script and that Steve Gillon will be the lead historical adviser.
