Census Day for Fools

Today is April Fools Day, but also Census Day. The former creates suspicions of pranks, the latter is generating suspicions of the paranoid, namely those who see the government’s constitutionally mandated count as needless intrusion.

But isn’t the real problem simple confusion. The Republican National Committee this month sent out its own “census” forms, with questions like, “Are you concerned that historic federal deficits and debt will seriously harm the future economic health of the country?” Who wouldn’t be? But it’s not the question that the federal government would ask on a Census form. Nevertheless, apparently a few people are upset that it’s just too much like a government document.

Of course, if you call the number at the bottom of the form, you won’t get some bureaucrat but a phone sex line. The RNC says it is a misprint, but the revelation couldn’t have come in a worse week.
