Robert Greenwald, who has been spearheading the effort challenging the historical cred of History’s “The Kennedys” miniseries, now is challenging the cable network to come up with the “names and credentials of the historians who will attest to historical integrity of the current script.”
After Greenwald showed a copy of the script to a number of historians several months ago, and they objected to its inaccuracies, the channel called his criticisms unfair, given that the script was still in development. When History announced the casting of Greg Kinnear as JFK and Katie Holmes as Jackie, they also said that the final product would be vetted by its own resident historians.
Historians have bemoaned Kennedy biopics before — there’s been ample fodder — but the presence of conservative Joel Surnow, of “24” fame, as the miniseries’ executive producer is what has triggered this flap.
What I wonder is whether the project really will have an impact. Martin Sheen, James Franciscus and Steven Weber all have played JFK. Do you remember any of those projects?
