Fesser's comedy will be among Spain's biggest pics this year

Zeta Audiovisual, the film and TV arm of Spanish media conglom Grupo Zeta, has greenlit its flagship production for 2010, “Mortadelo y Filemon 3D” — one of the biggest Spanish projects this year.

Helmer Javier Fesser (“Binta and the Great Idea”) will write and direct.

“Mortadelo” is produced for Zeta by Francisco Ramos, who inked a production consultancy deal with Zeta in April. He puts the budget at e10 million to e12 million ($12.6 million to $15.2 million).

Fesser’s production partner Luis Manso also produces.

“Mortadelo” is a live-action comedy based on Spain’s most celebrated comicbook property.

“We will go back to basics. A comicbook in Spain is one of the most obvious and best sources for adaptation,” Ramos told Variety.

Shooting early in 2011 for delivery in the first quarter of 2012, “Mortadelo” will be distributed in Spain by Warner Bros. Pics. Intl. Spain, Ramos said.
