Youth pics selected for Berlinale

'Dynamiter,' 'Hawthorn Tree' among first titles

Matthew Gordon’s indie “The Dynamiter” and Zhang Yimou’s drama “Under the Hawthorn Tree,” a love story set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, are among the first 12 titles selected for the Berlin Film Festival’s Generation youth and children’s sidebar, which includes the Kplus and 14plus sections.

Both pics unspool in the older-skewed 14plus, which will also show Heidi Marie Faisst’s “Rebounce” and Rune Schjott’s “Skyscraper,” both from Denmark; Australian Leon Ford’s “Griff the Invisible”; and U.K. title “West is West,” by Andy De Emmony.

Dorota Kedzierzawska’s returns with her third Berlinale premiere, the Polish-Japanese children’s adventure film “Tomorrow Will Be Better,” which screens in Kplus.

Also screening in Kplus are Olivier Ringer’s Belgian feature “On the Sly”; Norway’s “The Liverpool Goalie,” by Arild Andresen; Francis Xavier E. Pasion’s Philippine documentary “Sampaguita, National Flower”; and “A Cat in Paris,” by Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli.

Israeli helmer Guy Nattiv returns to Berlin nearly 10 years after winning a Crystal Bear for his short film “Mabul” (The Flood) with his feature of the same name, also in Kplus.

Some 60 films will unspool in the Generation section, which is due to take place in a new venue, the House of World Cultures.
