Weinsteins nab ‘Reign of Assassins’

Company takes North American rights

The Weinstein Company has picked up North American and South African rights to upcoming Michelle Yeoh starrer “Reign of Assassins.”

The martial arts pic, sold by Fortissimo Films, is produced by John Woo and Terence Chang through their Lion Rock Prods., China’s Galloping Horse Film and TV Prods., and Hong Kong’s Media Asia.

Woo co-directed the pic alongside “Silk” helmer Su Chao-pin.

Pic, which is in post-production, is expected to hit Chinese theaters this year. TWC is considering releasing the pic simultaneously in North America and South Africa.

In the pic, Yeoh stars as an assassin who falls in love with the son of a man her gang killed.

The deal was negotiated by Fortissimo’s Michael J. Werner and Winnie Lau, and TWC’s Peter Lawson and Michal Podell Steinberg.

Fortissimo secured the rights to “Reign of Assassins” outside China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South East Asia in October.
