Latest pic in the franchise will bow on 400 screens

TOKYO — Toho, Japan biggest domestic distrib, is to release its first live-action 3D pic, “Umizaru 3.”

The latest installment in the franchise about the loves and adventures of Japanese Coast Guard divers will bow in September on 400 screens including nearly 100 3D venues.

Launched in 2004, the “Umizaru” series has also generated a hit TV show.

All three pics have been helmed by Eiichiro Hasumi and star Hideaki Ito, with the Fuji TV network producing. The second pic, released in 2006, earned $77 million at the box office.
