‘Summer Wars’ in bid for Oscar

Animated Japanese film will play qualifying L.A. run

Japanese animated pic “Summer Wars” will get an Oscar-qualifying U.S. theatrical run next month through Gkids, the company that released last year’s animated nominee “The Secret of Kells.”

Movie will play a brief run in the L.A. area ahead of a subsequent run in Gotham and a return visit to Los Angeles. Funimation is set to release the pic on DVD and Blu-ray.

Directed by Mamoru Hosoda (“The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”), “Summer Wars” follows a teen math whiz whose summer visit to a small town unexpectedly involves trying to stop a looming apocalyptic collision between the real world and the virtual world. Film won the Japan Academy Prize for top animated pic.

Qualifying run plays the AMC Covina 30 Dec. 10-16.
