Strand takes U.S. rights to ‘Sleeping Beauty’

Catherine Breillat pic will bow next spring

Strand Releasing has picked up all U.S. rights to Catherine Breillat’s French pic “Sleeping Beauty” from Pyramide Intl., which is repping the film at the American Film Market.

“Sleeping Beauty” is Breillat’s follow up to fairy tale adaptation “Bluebeard,” which Strand also distributed in the U.S.

Strand will release “Sleeping Beauty” next spring.

In Breillat’s retelling of “Sleeping Beauty,” a young girl who is cursed to sleep for 100 years finds her escape through her dreams.

Film premiered at this year’s Venice Film Festival, followed by its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

“Ms. Breillat’s unique take on this fairy tale has all of her auteur trademarks,” Strand’s Marcus Hu said.

“Sleeping Beauty” was produced by Jean-Francois Lepetit and Sylvette Frydman.

Deal was negotiated by Strand’s Jon Gerrans and Pyramide’s Yoann Ubermulhin.
