Film set for release next spring

Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Palme D’Or winner “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” from The Match Factory.

Strand plans to release “Uncle” next spring.

Story centers on title character who has chosen to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the countryside when the ghost of his deceased wife appears to care for him, and his long-lost son returns home in a non-human form.

It’s the fourth Weerasethakul pic handled by Strand Releasing following “Blissfully Yours,” “Tropical Malady” and “Syndromes and a Century.”

“Uncle” has been sold to more than 40 territories. Pic was produced by Kick the Machine Films and Illuminations Films with Anna Sanders Films, The Match Factory, GFF Geissendoerfer Film-und Fernsehproduktion and Eddie Saeta.

Strand’s upcoming titles include Lou Ye’s “Spring Fever,” Francois Ozon’s “Hideaway,” Michael Rowe’s “Leap Year” and Pablo Trapero’s “Carancho,” this year’s Camera D’Or winner.
