PARIS — Less than a week before the Cannes Film Festival kicks off, a violent sea storm hit the French Riviera, devastating 33 beach restaurants along the Cannes Croisette.
City officials said 30-foot waves started breaking late Wednesday afternoon, causing thousands of dollars of damage to beachfront eateries including the Carlton, Martinez and Miramar.
As the fest contributes in large part to the town’s economy, locals and business owners have joined forces to clean up the Croisette beachfront as fast as possible before the event starts on Wednesday.
“Everything will be picture-perfect, in time for the first day of the festival,” said Gerard Grizzetti, president of the beach restaurants’ union.
Similar storms hit Cannes in January and February, per Grizzetti.
