‘Soul’ nabs Hot Docs audience award

Mark Landsman's pic takes kudo at docu fest

TORONTO — “Thunder Soul,” helmer Mark Landsman’s tribute to Conrad Johnson, who turned Houston’s floundering Kashmere High School Band into a 1970s funk sensation, has won the Hot Docs audience award, it was announced on Monday.

Pic preemed in March at SXSW fest, where it won the Lone Star State aud award.

The Toronto fest, the largest documentary event in North America, wrapped on Sunday after hosting a record 136,000 fans who turned out for 170 pics.

Hot Docs’ top 10 audience favorites were: “Thunder Soul” (directed by Mark Landsman, U.S.); “A Drummer’s Dream” (directed by John Walker, Canada); “My Life With Carlos” (directed by German Berger, Chile, Spain, Germany); “Autumn Gold” (directed by Jan Tenhaven, Austria, Germany); “Leave Them Laughing” (directed by John Zaritsky, Canada, U.S.); “Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage” (directed by Scot McFadyen, Sam Dunn, Canada); “Listen to This” (directed by Juan Baquero, Canada); “A Small Act” (directed by Jennifer Arnold, U.S.); “Waste Land” (directed by Lucy Walker, U.K., Brazil); and “Marwencol” (directed by Jeff Malmberg, U.S.).

“Autumn Gold” also won the inaugural Filmmakers Award voted on by helmers with docs in the fest’s official selection.
