Sony Pictures Releasing Intl. has inked with exhib Odeon-UCI to provide digital versions of its pics in the U.K., Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy and Austria.
Sony will provide digital films on a picture-by-picture basis in theaters with DCI-compliant digital projection systems.
Sony will also support the initiative to achieve 100% digital rollout by contributing certain digital conversion fees.
This is the sixth studio pact for Odeon-UCI — longterm digital deployment deals have been inked with all the majors and various independent distributors to support digital funding in the U.K.
Odeon-UCI, Europe’s largest exhib chain, expects to complete the digitization of its 1,800 screens by the end of 2012.
Odeon-UCI CEO Rupert Gavin said, “This deal with Sony completes the big studio picture for us in the U.K., where all of the major Hollywood studios are now on board.”
At the end of June, Odeon-UCI had 491 digital screens across its seven territories, including 280 in the U.K., a 145% overall increase in just three months.
The exhib has the most digital screens of any cinema chain in the U.K. and Europe, as well as the most 3D screens.
