Sony acquires Media Molecule

Developer is behind hit PlayStation3 game 'LittleBigPlanet'

TOKYO — Sony Computer Entertainment announced Wednesday that it has acquired U.K. game developer Media Molecule. Deal was inked Tuesday.

The object of the pact is to strengthen and expand SCE Worldwide Studios, which manages development of game titles in Japan, Europe and North America.

Based in Surrey, England, Media Molecule is the developer of the hit PlayStation 3 game “LittleBigPlanet,” which has moved 3 million units worldwide. Players can create and upload their own game levels and enjoy them with other players worldwide. About 1.7 million levels have been uploaded to date, and the game has won more than 90 awards.

“Since they burst onto the gaming scene, Media Molecule have proved to be a truly exciting and innovative studio,” SCE Worldwide Studios prexy Shuhei Yoshida said in a statement. “To bring them into our family proves our dedication to creating fantastic new experiences that we believe will cement our position as industry leaders.”
