Multi-media mash-up includes a film, comic and book

“Kill Shakespeare,” an ambitious multimedia mash-up including a feature film, has won the Telefilm Canada Pitch This! contest, held Tuesday at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.

A jury awarded the C$10,000 ($9,733) development prize to the project’s Toronto-based co-creators Conor McCreery and Anthony Del Col after considering five other pitches.

Since quitting their day jobs two years ago, the pair have raised $350,000 in private equity to support the first phase and allow them to retain creative control as it expands.

“Kill Shakespeare” pits heroes and villains from a dozen plays in an epic supernatural adventure setting with the Bard as the reclusive wizard.

A 12-title comic series, published by San Diego-based IDW Publishing, launched in North America in April (issue five just released), and a trade paperback compiling the first six issues drops this fall.

McCreery and Del Col have been meeting with prospective U.S. partners about the next phases of the project, which includes a feature (first draft of screenplay complete) and a range of web and ancillary endeavours.

McCreery, a longtime patron of Canada’s Stratford Festival, said “Kill Shakespeare” attracted solid buzz at July’s Comic-Con in San Diego.
