Cannes pavilion to highlight filming opportunities

Moves to bring Russia in line with film industry support structures common in Europe will be in the spotlight at a series of events at the country’s national pavilion at Cannes’ Intl. Village.

A newly minted Russian National Film Commission launches its international operations this year, designed to attract foreign movie productions to Russia.

A presentation on the opportunities available to filmmakers will be hosted at the Russian Pavilion from 4-6 p.m. Sunday with representatives from the commission and leading film studios equipped for working with international partners.

The co-production theme will be picked up again May 18 when a panel discussion on finance, distribution and co-production will look at latest developments.

Plans for the second edition of the Business Square at June’s Moscow Intl. Film Festival will be presented, as well as the Ministry of Culture’s new public film finance structure, Moscow’s international film market, which runs four times a year, and the latest results from the box office of one of Europe’s biggest movie markets.

The latest batch of films from rising directors and producers kicks off events Friday with a focus on new Russian cinema.

Other highlights of the Russian Pavilion program, which runs today through May 20, include a Saturday conference on how current Russian cinema fits into world cinema trends led by Konstantin Ernst, head of the country’s top public television station the First Channel and producer of hits films “Night Watch,” “Day Watch” and “Admiral.”
