Brazilian film investment agency RioFilme is set to co-produce the $5 million drama “Coracoes Sujos” (“Dirty Hearts”) with Brazil’s Mixer.
Based on Fernando Morais’ novel, the 1945-set drama centers on the Japanese colony in Brazil that was decimated by a wave of suicides following the rumor that Japan had won the war.
Rio Filme is financing the project with a bridge loan that covers 15% of the budget and private equity.
Downtown Filmes will handle domestic distribution.
RioFilme CEO Sergio Sa Leitao and COO Adrien Muselet said they were looking for a strong Japanese cast.
