'2 Days,' 'Prey,' 'Love' among hot ticket items

PARIS — Providing further signs that there is certainly still an international market for strong, audience-friendly fare at a good price, Gallic mini-major Rezo inked 55 sales deals at or just after last month’s Berlin Film Festival.

Julie Delpy’s “2 Days in New York,” genre pic “Prey,” Xavier Dolan’s “Love, Imagined” and “Mademoiselle Chambon” were top sales titles.

U.S. deals included a Kino Lorber pick up on “Chambon” and Film Movement’s purchase of “Jaffa.”

Like other companies working a mix of English- and foreign-language fare — StudioCanal, Pathe Intl., Memento, Wild Bunch, Match Factory and Fortissimo — Rezo sold across a wide slate, suggesting some strength-in-depth in a market that increasingly revolves around hot sellers, both companies and titles.

Written, directed by and to star Delpy, “2 Days” closed Germany (Senator), Australia (Hopscotch), Spain (Alta), Korea (AUD), Switzerland (Xenix) and Scandinavia (NonStop), among major territories. Rezo also licensed Hong Kong, Middle East, Taiwan, Turkey and Portugal.

Deals with Benelux, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Israel and Singapore are in the works.

“We really felt an appetite from buyers for projects in Berlin: Distributors are happy to commit on films as long you have the right package,” said Sebastien Chesneau, Rezo international sales head.

A romantic drama from upcoming Gallic director Stephane Brize (“Not Here to Be Loved”), “Chambon” added 13 deals to a pre-Berlin 25 territory trawl. Key new sales included Germany (Arsenal), Spain (Sagrera), Australia (Sharmill), Argentina (CDI) and Brazil (Imovision).

“Chambon” sales roll off its French B.O. gross: a first four-week Euros 2.6 million ($3.6 million). But, suggesting pre-sale biz is on the rebound, Rezo licensed forest creature feature “Prey” and “Imagined” off promo reels: “Prey” to E1 for U.K. and Canada, plus deals with Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia, “Imagined” to Benelux’s ABC/Cinemien, plus Taiwan and Greece.

Now in post, “Magic Valley” from first-timer Jaffe Zinn, starring Kyle Gallner and Matthew Gubler, licensed Greece, Middle East and Taiwan.

Berlin firms up Rezo’s rep as a top echelon producer-distributor — it has taken France on “New York” and “Imagined” — which is consolidating relations with new directors and producers: Rezo handled international sales on Delpy’s “2 Days in Paris,” Dolan’s Cannes hit deb “I Killed My Mother” — which it sold at Berlin to Spain (Sagrera) and Brazil (Seven Arts) — and “Frozen River,” from “Magic Valley” producer Heather Rae.

Rezo is also ploughing ever more into genre and new distrib tactics.

From France’s Thomas Bornot, Alain-Michel Blanc and Gilles Amado, “The Game of Death,” about a live murder TV gameshow, sold at Berlin to Wild Bunch Germany, Canada’s Metropole and Spain’s Sagrera.

“For the toughest markets such as Japan, we’re discussing new ways of distribution,” said Chesneau.

In Japan, “Frozen Riven” was released almost day-and-date in theatrical and VOD.

“It proved to be successful. We want to repeat the experience and increasingly market our films a different way,” Chesneau added.
