‘One War’ takes top prize at Sofia fest

Special jury prize goes to 'Last Summer'

The 14th Sofia Film Festival wrapped in the Bulgarian capital’s cavernous Palace of Culture on Saturday night, with the top prize going to Russian World War II drama “One War,” helmed by Vera Glagoleva.

The jury, headed by thesp Pierre-Henri Deleau, gave the directing award to Serbia’s Miroslav Momcilovic, for his debut pic, “Wait for Me and I Will Not Come.”

Rounding out the main competition, the special jury prize went to “The Last Summer of La Boyita,” an Argentina/Spain/France co-production directed by Julia Solomonoff, while special mention went to the home country for tyro helmer Kamen Kalev’s “Eastern Plays,” which debuted at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight.

“Eastern Plays” also picked up the prize for Bulgarian feature.

Turkish pic “Wrong Rosary,” directed by Mahmut Fazil Coskun, topped the Balkan competition, and Peter Kerekes’ “Cooking History,” a Slovak majority co-production, aced the docu division.

The Fipresci international critics’ award went to “Bad Day to Go Fishing” from Uruguayan director Alvaro Brechner.

Also announced on stage were the awards for the pitching sessions held as part of the seventh Sofia Meetings industry event.

The Sofia Meetings, run by fest deputy director Mira Staleva, attracted an ever-growing group of producers, distributors, sales agents and film funds, this year expanding its reach well beyond the region in recognition of the increasing call for international co-productions.

Among the delegates attending pitching sessions were representatives from the Match Factory, the Irish Film Board, Fortissimo Films, Germany’s Robert Bosch Foundation, and the film commission of the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
